Whether you're a novice or an expert, you lose all sense of time when you are in the zone.
I've experienced that time and time again. I go in to fix 1 thing on a website or a blog or a photoshop project before bed and next thing I know it's 3:45 in the morning and I have to be up at 7:30.
So then I end up rushing through the end of my projects and making my bed and brushing my teeth and putting on pajamas. I get up and hear every bone in my body crack and a sudden tiredness rush through my body. Practically dragging my feet to and from the bathroom, eyes closed while I rinse with listerine. As soon as I get in bed I'm tossing and turning because I left the damn screen on the highest brightness level and turned off flux (it's a blue screen emitting program, like sunblock for computer screens, everyone who spends more than 10 minutes on a computer should have). My voice sounds so sad and my words slurred as I tell siri to wake me up at 7:30 even though I know I'm going to hit the snooze button a few times.
But one thing I did last night that was witty for me but also for my own protction and the safety of others around my house is I made a note. The note, written in purple ink stated simply:
Situation: didn't get to bed until 4 a.m.
Why: web designer who has slight OCD and a caffeine sensitivity
What You Can Do: let me sleep in and treat me like I have the biggest hangover when I wake up
Now the note worked and I got to sleep in until 9, knowing full well I was not going to wake up at 7:30, but hey it was worth a try. And now here I am typing a blog post about my miserable atttempt at being adorable in my loss of time and sleep at 9:15 in the morning before I've even gotten up and seen anyone. This headache is terrible and there is a screaming 3 year old in the living room.....so I'm taking my time. The worst part is I have to try not to be a grump, even though it's my own fault blah blah blah I've heard it all....still doesn't change my mood but I'll try....again.
So here's to web designers. People who think "hey espresso at 9:30 p.m. isn't a bad idea" and end up downing 4 advils in the morning before they utter a single hello. To web designers who even after a scheduled day of work still tell themselves they're only going to open the computer for 5 minutes to check on that one thing and then close it and end up staying awake until they can hear the morning Lark.
I'm gonna stop my ode so I can go get some coffee and advil in my system.....oh the sick cycle of caffeine.
Bye!
