A Guide to Hiking Essentials

Breakdown of what I always NEED to take on my hikes

Hydration and Nutrition
    • 2400 ML of Water
      • Yes, water! Obviously. I have 2 Nalgene bottles I fill up with water at home. I don't put it in the fridge or put ice in there, by the time I actually drink it, it's warm anyway. Also condensation mess is something I hate dealing with.
    • Fruit Strip Bars and Nut Butter Single Packs
      • Easy instant carb fix for energy and protein fix for those hard working muscles. Perfect servings to watch the nutrition and small enough to keep in your pack so you don't make a mess and aren't prone to littering. Also real organic fruit strip bars are beyond concentrated juice. If it's the right kind, you get the sweet fix without the mess of peels, cores, stems...etc.

Safety First!
    • Smith and Wesson Pocket Knife
      • I'll be honest I haven't really used it on a hike yet. But I know it's something safe to have on whether I come into an obstacle with a branch, ropes....etc. Also for defense against any threats of violence!
    • First Aid Kit
      • Anti-Septic wipes, band-aids, gauze wrap, alcohol....all that fun stuff. Yup it's important and I keep small pack on me. I think I use the band-aids more than anything when I get blisters from my boots or shoes.
      • Also Bug-Spray and Sunscreen....two items to protect before anytning bad happens!
    • Backup Layers and Blanket
      • I always take backup layers of clothing (sweatshirt, athletic pants, socks, headwarmer....etc.) as well as a pair of tennis shoes. Never know when you'll need to change because of a tear or sudden weather shift!
      • My blanket is my favorite for when I reach a point on my hike I want to sit down and relax. Maybe journal or read or just take a moment to stretch and enjoy nature!
Technology of Course
    • All-Trails Pro App
      • This app is by far essential for me when I plan my hikes and am on the trail. It tracks my progress and path so I don't get lost, but I'm also able to see what other trails around me are accessible. This is pretty much like "Yelp" but for trails (hiking, mountain biking, backpacking...etc.)
    • iPod and Back-Up Phone
      • I've turned my old 5s into my iPod since it supports my Apple Music subscription and downloads. Great for podcasts and keeping my mind occupied. Also, I have a work phone for this business of web design and consulting, so I just keep it on me as a backup for contacting my emergency persons and lines.
    • Fitness Tracker
      • My Fitbit Alta and my Fossil Q watch are both fitness trackers. It's great that with the Fitbit app, you can track your GPS and hiking activity completely separate from just your everyday steps. Fossil Q doesn't offer that from my understanding, but it's still a pretty accurate step counter!
    • Backup Battery
      • I love my backup batteries. So much so I bring two with me. One from Zagg and one from Dabney Lee. Both keep my phones and iPod ready to go and on with all the use they go through tracking using wi-fi, bluetooth, and general battery. Just remember to bring the cord with you!
